    • More about Johanne HØST
Pronunciation: First name has three syllables (i.e. pronounce the final e). The surname is pronounced with a long “u”: “Who-st.”
      Burial: Belsyde Cemetery, Fergus, ON
First name: Written as “Hanne” on a 1957 photographer with her sisters.
      Stepfather: Peder Christian HANSEN
Residences: Copenhagen, Denmark (birth-1899), Skovsgaard, Espe, Denmark (1900-1906), Toronto, Ontario (1910- 1914); Fergus, Ontario (1914 and after).
Languages: Danish, English, and 5 other languages
Immigration: Immigrated to Canada in 1910 (according to Ellis Island records from 1914). She made at least two trips to Denmark, as per these immigration records:
Ellis Island arrival (5 February 1914): Dated 1 March 1914, but the manifest indicates an arrival of 5 February 1914. Indicates her “last permanent residence” as Fergus, Ontario, with a destination of Fergus, Ontario to join friend “Miss Smellie.” It is likely that she was visiting Denmark, without Esther. Her nearest closest relative was indicated to be her stepfather, “Mr. Hansen,” who resided in Odense, Denmark.
Canadian port arrival (dated 1 March 1914): Destination of Toronto, Ontario (oddly different from the Ellis Island record), with an occupation of housekeeper. Apparently travelling with the same three companions listed on the Ellis Island immigration record: Haus HM Hansen, Henrik Liebman, and Oluf Berntsen. All born in Denmark, although the others indicated final destinations of Montreal or Vancouver.
Ellis Island arrival (25 April 1915): Returned with daughter Esther, then age 4, from Denmark. Nearest relative in Denmark is indicated as Mrs Petersen, 59 Nyaesgarde K. Travelling to join “home to husband, Fergus, Ontario.” Notation indicates “transit aid refused.” Note: She was NOT married at the time of the record.
Border crossing: To New York State 6 May 1945, to visit her daughter Esther, who resided in West Palm Beach, Florida.
Travel: Visited Copenhagen in December 1954, returning to New York City on January 5, 1955.
Personal characteristics: 5’, 5” tall, brown hair, brown eyes
Family folklore: She wanted to be a doctor. She came from a very wealthy and well-known family in Denmark. Her mother was an attendant to the queen of Denmark. Her family sent her to Canada because she was pregnant (with Esther) and not married; the father was an employee (a farmhand) of the family. Svend was sent to Canada to marry Johanne after Esther’s birth.
      Occupation: Housekeeper (1910, 1914)
      Religion: Protestant (1914), Lutheran (1915)

More about Svend MEYER and Johanne HØST:
Genetic relationship: In addition to being husband and wife, they were second cousins twice through two bloodlines. Their mothers (Agnes and Marie ROHDE) were first cousins. Their grandfathers (Andreas and Niels Frederik ROHDE) were brothers who both married BRUSCH sisters. Consequently, they shared four great-grandparents: Peter ROHDE, Johanne HOLM, Carl Frederik BRUSCH, and Johanne Margareth ULSTRUP. Second cousins usually share only two great-grandparents.
